Preparations

Assemble tools: Screwdriver, wire strippers, level. If in doubt about wiring (millivolt, line, or low voltage), consult a qualified heating and air conditioning contractor, electrician, or someone familiar with basic electricity and wiring.

Operator: Save these instructions for future use! FAILURE TO READ AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY BEFORE INSTALLING OR OPERATING THIS CONTROL COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

This product does not contain mercury. However, this product may replace a unit which contains mercury. Do not open mercury cells. If a cell becomes damaged, do not touch any spilled mercury. Wearing non-absorbent gloves, take up the spilled mercury with sand or other absorbent material and place into a sealed container. Discard properly; return to White Rodgers for disposal.

Description

This low voltage thermostat is designed to provide convenient control of the heating system. To provide greater room comfort, the sensitive spiral bimetal is combined with an adjustable heating anticipator to provide maximum comfort.

Precautions

CAUTION! To prevent electrical shock and/or equipment damage, disconnect electric power to system at main fuse or circuit breaker box until installation is complete. Label all wires prior to disconnection when servicing controls. Wiring errors can cause improper and dangerous operation.

WARNING! Do not exceed the specification ratings. All wiring must conform to local and national electrical codes and ordinances. Do not short out terminals on gas valve or primary control to test. Short or incorrect wiring will burn out heat anticipator and could cause personal injury and/or property damage. Do not use on circuits exceeding 30 volts. Higher voltage will damage control and could cause shock or fire hazard.

This control is a precision instrument, and should be handled carefully. Rough handling or distorting components could cause the control to malfunction. This control has been accurately calibrated at the factory. Any attempt to calibrate this control will void the White Rodgers warranty.

Installation

Select Thermostat Location

Proper location insures that the thermostat will provide a comfortable home temperature. Observe the following general rules when selecting a location:

  1. Mount approximately 5 ft. above the floor on an inside partitioning wall.
  2. Avoid locations close to fireplaces, cooking stoves, or other sources of heat.
  3. Avoid locations subject to drafts, radiant heat from the sun, or to discharge air from convectors.
  4. Avoid locations close to doors, outside walls, or poorly insulated walls.
  5. Avoid locations close to air registers, or in the direct path of air from them.
  6. Avoid locations near concealed pipes or chimneys.
  7. Avoid locations close to electrical lights or appliances having a high heat output.
  8. Avoid areas where poor air circulation exists.
  9. Avoid areas where cooking vapors or odors are present.
  10. Do not install in bathrooms or kitchens.
  11. Prefer living/dining room location if no other locations are available.

Route Wires to Location

Run wires from heating equipment to thermostat location. Use 18-gauge solid or 20-gauge stranded thermostat wire. Do not use larger than 18-gauge wire.

Attach Thermostat to Wall

  1. Remove cover from thermostat by gripping the base in one hand. Use the other hand to pull gently at the top or bottom of the cover.
  2. Carefully remove the shipping protective packing from the switch.
  3. Pull wires through the opening in the thermostat base and connect wires beneath the terminal screws (see Fig. below).
  4. Push excess wire back into the hole in the wall. Secure the thermostat to the wall using the two screws provided.
  5. Replace the cover on the thermostat by lining up the tabs and snapping into place.

Wiring

Typical Wiring Diagram

For single stage heating: Connect one wire to R (red) and one to W (white). For millivolt systems, connect to MV terminals.

  1. Connect wires to appropriate terminals (R for power, W for heat).
  2. Tighten screws securely.

CAUTION! Do not short terminals. Handle carefully.

Operation & Maintenance

Adjusting Heat Anticipator

Match the heat anticipator setting to the current rating of the primary control on the furnace. The anticipator setting is usually stamped on the primary control or gas valve. Set the anticipator pointer to match that rating (e.g., 0.15 to 1.2 Amps). If no rating is found, start with 0.3 Amps and adjust if needed for cycle length.

Calibrating Thermostat

Place a thermometer on the thermostat cover. Turn on heating system. Allow system to run until thermometer reads close to thermostat setting. If not matching, remove cover and turn calibration screw (behind dial) clockwise to raise or counterclockwise to lower the setting.
