The White Rodgers UP310 is a non-programmable thermostat with Home/Sleep/Away presets for single-stage or two-stage heat pumps, gas, oil, and electric furnaces. It features manual temperature control, auto/manual changeover, cycle rate adjustment, keypad lockout, and filter reminder. Powered by 24 VAC; compatible with systems up to 1.5A per terminal, 1.5A max total. Below are the key specifications, installation, operation, configuration, and troubleshooting instructions.
Assemble tools: hand or power drill with 3/16 inch drill bit (if needed), flat blade screwdriver, wire cutter/stripper, level, voltmeter. Shut off power to the heating and cooling system at the main fuse or circuit breaker box until installation complete. Label wires before disconnecting. Verify package contents include thermostat, wallplate, mounting screws, and 2 AA batteries. This thermostat is for low voltage systems only; not for line voltage. Install away from drafts, direct sunlight, or heat sources for accurate sensing.
WARNING! Failure to read and follow all instructions carefully before installing or operating this control could cause personal injury and/or property damage. Save these instructions.
The thermostat is a non-programmable device with Home/Sleep/Away presets for single-stage or two-stage heat pumps, gas, oil, and electric furnaces. It includes manual temperature control, auto/manual changeover, cycle rate adjustment, keypad lockout, and filter reminder. LCD display shows room temperature, setpoint, and status icons. Terminals: R (hot), W (heating), Y (cooling), G (fan), O/B (changeover), C (common).
Applications: Gas or Oil-Burning Furnaces: Yes; Hydronic Heating Systems: Yes; Central Air Conditioning Systems: Yes; Single-Stage Heating and Cooling Systems: Yes; Two-Stage Heat Pumps: Yes.
CAUTION! To prevent electrical shock/equipment damage, disconnect power at main fuse/circuit breaker until installation complete. Label wires prior to disconnection. If in doubt about wiring, consult qualified heating/air conditioning contractor.
WARNING! Do not use on circuits exceeding 24 VAC 50/60 Hz (1.5A per terminal, 1.5A max total); higher voltage damages control/causes shock/fire. Do not short terminals on gas valve/primary control to test; short/incorrect wiring burns out components/causes injury/property damage. Conform to NEC Class II circuits. Do not operate cooling below 50°F (compressor damage).
Shut off power to the heating and cooling system. Remove the front cover of the old thermostat. Label each wire using the terminal labeling reference chart (e.g., R, W, Y, G, O/B). Disconnect wires one at a time. Remove the old thermostat base from the wall.
Attach the new thermostat's wallplate to the wall using supplied screws and anchors if needed. Connect labeled wires to corresponding terminals on the wallplate. Set the ELEC/GAS switch based on the system type. Set the cycle rate (Fast or Slow for hydronic systems). Install 2 AA batteries and attach the thermostat cover. Restore power.
| Wire Color | Terminal | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Red | R | 24V Power |
| White | W | Heating |
| Yellow | Y | Cooling |
| Green | G | Fan |
| Orange | O/B | Changeover Valve |
Note: For heat pumps, set O/B switch: O for cool, B for heat. Refer to old thermostat wiring for exact matches.
Restore power. Set SYSTEM to HEAT/COOL, FAN to ON/AUTO, adjust setpoint to test.
CAUTION! Do not operate below 50°F.
Non-programmable thermostat. Setpoints are manually adjusted using up/down arrows. Use Home, Sleep, and Away presets for quick temperature settings.
Set ELEC/GAS switch (GAS for gas/oil, ELEC for electric). Select cycle rate: Fast (default) or Slow (SL) for hydronic systems. Configure filter reminder and keypad lockout via menu.
| Option | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Cycle Rate | Fast | Set to Slow for hydronic heating |
| ELEC/GAS | GAS | GAS for gas/oil, ELEC for electric |
| O/B | O | O for cool, B for heat (heat pumps) |
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
|---|---|---|
| Display blank or erratic | Voltage spike/static discharge | Reset: Move SYSTEM to OFF, press all three buttons, then move to HEAT while holding buttons |
| Heating/cooling not working | Incorrect wiring or switch settings | Verify wire connections and switch settings (FAN, SYSTEM, ELEC/GAS, O/B) |
| Fan not operating | FAN switch set to OFF | Set FAN switch to AUTO |
| Filter reminder appears | Filter needs replacement | Replace air filter in HVAC system |
| Temperature display inaccurate | Factory calibration drift | Adjust displayed temperature using calibration feature |
